I woke up, looked outside and immediately felt sorry for whomever is running outdoor bootcamps in the Austin, Texas area this morning. There was a chill in the air, rain JUST started coming down in torrents and it was “prime time” for morning bootcamp classes to begin.
It was 6 am. It was cold. It just started raining.
Now you have to understand that “cold” means something different for us “ya’lls” down here in Texas. Anything below 60 degrees F and we’re ducking for the covers, the heater, the goose down jackets.
But back to my story.
What do you do when you’ve already started your outdoor bootcamp class and it starts pouring down rain? Do you:
- Run for cover and shout “everyone for himself (or herself)”?
- Keep working out as if nothing is happening?
- Cancel the class and go hang out to dry at Starbucks?
- Kill’em with kindness?
What, Scott, do you mean, “Kill’em with kindness?”
This basically means “kill them with kindness”. You know, #2 on the list above. Just keep working out, act as if nothing is happening, up the intensity and see who might be brave enough to try and leave. You’re being “kind” to them for giving them what they paid for…a workout. They knew coming in that bad weather was possibly part of the deal. Use this opportunity to set the standard. No one leaves until the workout is over.
Unless it starts lightning or a tornado appears. Then see # 1 above.
Seriously. We’ve had some of our best bootcamp workouts in crappy weather.
Here’s one of those kind of workouts that you can use. It’s so intense and off the wall, that I doubt anyone will notice that it’s raining.
- Partner up with someone of equal ability
- Do the workout together, both going at the same time
- Do the paired exercises in “superset” fashion
- Do the burpees first, then do the second exercise
- Rest up to one minute in between supersets (or let heart rate come down to a safe level)
20 Burpees and 20 Incline Push Ups
20 Burpees and 20 Decline Push Ups
20 Burpees and 20 Kettlebell Swings
20 Burpees and 20 Sit Ups
20 Burpees and 20 Air Squats
20 Burpees and 20 Dips
20 Burpees and 20 Single Leg Forward Reaches (10 ea side – ha, ha…this will be fun to watch)
20 Burpees and 20 Deep Breaths (transition exercise)
